ReplyDeleteThe use of parent surveys are a great way to get feedback from parents on how they would like to be contacted. Allowing the parents to have a "say" lets parents feel involved, builds teacher/parent, school/community relationships. With today's technology,I think you will find that there are multiple ways parents prefer to be contacted. I look forward to viewing your findings.
DeleteFollow me on my blog as I explore "Improving Cafeteria Behavior and Management."
I appreciate your feedback! Thank you!! As we have been getting surveys back, they have been very interesting to look at! Cannot wait to dive into the rest!
DeleteI like that your focus is on good communication in order to improve student behavior. Often times, the parents of repeat student discipline problems seem annoyed or bothered by communication from the school. Your surveys may be a good "bridge builder" for these parents to get to have input into the best way to be contacted and may help them be less defensive when a teacher reaches out. Are you creating the observation, interview question, and survey scoring tools?
ReplyDeleteOur parent surveys went out this week, and they are being analyzed next week! I will be creating the interview questions, observations tools, and data collections tools all based on the research that I am doing! My main point of reference will be Ruby Payne's studies. She has great ideas and background of working positively with parents!
DeleteRuby Payne has great ideas! I hope you will be sharing your strategies for us to follow as you implement them. Excited about your findings!
DeleteYes! I love her ideas...I will share my findings on here! I am here to help any who would benefit!
DeleteI am very interested in your topic of research. As a 1st grade teacher, I am constantly talking to the same parents whose child misbehaves in the classroom. While some parents take it to heart and really talk to their child about improving their negative behavior, I am realizing that some parents just don't know how to discipline their own child. One parent in particular would make excuses for their child.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely like to see what other effective forms of communications you discover that I have yet to use.
You are exactly on target for what we are trying to target...How can we positively influence the communication to make a difference! I hope what we find out will help you along the way! I think it is something we all are hopeful for!
DeleteI think the use of the parent surveys is a great idea. Good luck on your project.
ReplyDeleteThank you! We have been retrieving them this week, and will do the same one next year! We look forward to our findings!
DeleteI think parent communication is so important, and I think your research is a great idea. At our school we have daily folders that go home showing parents their students behavior for each day, and we also use it for sending and receiving messages from parents. It seems to be effective with most parents, but there is a percentage of parents that never open the folder or read messages from the teachers about their child. I look forward to following your progress to see if you come up with a good way to reach those parents that are "hard to reach". I think using Ruby Payne as a resource is a great idea! If I could make one suggestion, I would add meeting with your site supervisor at the midpoint to discuss what the surveys have shown and keep them informed of your progress and possible changes you would like to implement. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteYes...we are actually meeting as a committee this coming week for the surveys and then at the end of next year for the surveys! You read my mind! We are meeting this week, Wednesday since the surveys were just returned. Then, throughout the year, we will check about every two months on documentation teachers have provided with random parent interviews. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR COMMENT :)
